On March 29, 2016, we wrote about the story of Rossi Starbrook, a 6 year-old boy who is fighting leukaemia and whose mum is organising a weekend festival to raise money for charity.
Well, there is more to the story now. Leanne Starbrook took Rossi to see Iron Maiden at Download Festival 2016 and one day after it, she posted on our Facebook page:
The idea of possibly having helped Rossi realize his dream made me very happy and I reached out to Leanne and asked her about more details about this very special day. So, here is what she had to say to me, in this exclusive story:
“So, Rossi has always liked Rock and metal music. He heard Metallica and AC/DC when he was still in my tummy 🙂
But when he first heard Iron Maiden play, it stepped up a gear. He listened to them constantly and learnt what all the songs were about. He’s now great at history, knows about the battle of Britain and all about planes !!
He almost became obsessed with it, he learnt all the album covers and all the different Eddies and which album they were off. Ask him any song and he’ll tell you what album its from !
I videoed him one day singing Aces high and posted it on youtube:

It got shared so much, especially on your page and twitter that somebody who used to do security for Iron maiden commented and said how great it would be if we could get Rossi to meet Bruce Dickinson. He got in touch with Andy Copping who organises Download and it all snowballed from there .
We were taking him anyway to see them on Sunday so he didn’t know about meeting Bruce until he got to see him.
It was all very good security and Rossi felt very special being ushered around backstage. He was made to feel like the little hero that he is. When he finally got to meet Bruce, it was such a shock to him that he didn’t really know what to say!!

He did tell him that he had Leukeamia and Bruce was his hero because he’d had cancer too. Bruce couldn’t have been more lovely. He was very quietly spoken and him and Rossi spoke to each other, which made Rossi feel amazing.
We still have another year of Rossi having chemotherapy and lumbar punctures, but i don’t think he really cares now.
Meeting Bruce Dickinson was most definitely the best thing that ever happened to him and came along at the right time, when he needed and bit of a moral boost.
He told me that it was the best day of his life and that Download was the best place ever 🙂
A big thanks to Andy copping as well, without whom none of this would’ve happened.”
Team Rossi is working on hosting its own mini Download festival, with top tribute band Hi-On Maiden set to perform. See the charity’s website for details of upcoming fundraisers and information on how to donate to the cause.
